Moulding the Idea

It was around the end of 1965, then 颜经祜 (Gan Keng Hor),颜有政 (Gan Yue Cheng) received an invitation from Malacca Gan Clan Association (马六甲桃杨仁贵颜氏宗词) to be their Clan office bearers. However, both of them declined the invitation as Gan Keng Hor felt he was too old and it was not convenient for him to travel frequently to Malacca; and Gan Yue Cheng pointed out that since Malaysia and Singapore were separated, he could not contribute effectively to their development. Instead, the Malacca Invitation letter sparked off an idea for Gan Yue Cheng to establish our own Gan Clan Association in Singapore. He decided to give it a try and started to garner support from his friends who were fellow Gans in Singapore.

The Preparation stage

Gan Yue Cheng first hosted a dinner at 丰择楼 to explore the idea of setting up the Association in Singapore. He invited 颜期巢,颜辉宗,颜国华,颜挺节,颜松旭,颜文玄,颜光辉,颜期清,颜才亢,颜长寿,颜期成 to be his pro-tem committee members. He will be the Association’s representative and proposer, the temporary office was to be located at颜辉宗 (Gan Hui Chong)’s business office. After the first meeting, 颜挺节 was appointed to officially register the Association with the authority. On 6th April 1966, the application was officially approved.

Soliciting Clan members

Immediately after the Association obtained the official approval, 颜国华,颜挺节,颜期成,颜长寿set up a committee to recruit new Clan members. Initially they met with much resistance in their drive to recruit new members. For those who were adverse to the idea, they spent much effort to persuade them, but few were keen to join the new Association.

Buying a permanent home

For the long term benefit of the Association, it would be more cost effective, practical and convenient to operate from a permanent address than to rent. Again, Gan Yue Cheng mobilised his Exco members to raise the necessary funds for the purchase of a permanent home. It was with much hard work and deliberation that they finally decided to buy the shop house at 18-20 Bukit Pasoh Road. The purchase price was S$135,000, and it would cost more than S$200,000 including renovation. In 1976颜有政,颜期巢,颜辉宗,颜文祥 went to visit the Philippines Gan Clan. They received a donation of S$30,000 from a fellow Gan from the Philippines, 颜期党. As a gesture of appreciation for his generous donation, we named one of the halls in the Association’s premises (纯治堂) as 纯治 was his mother’s maiden name. The other named person in the association's hall is "YEE HOON" (father of Gan Yue Cheng). Yue Cheng also donated $30000. With the generous donations from these members, the Association was thus able to own this permanent home for Clan members without incurring any financial debt.
